Legal Committee (LEG)

Legal Committee (LEG): undertakes any matter including liability, compensation and indemnity issues arising throughout ship operations, such as abandonment of seafarers, fair treatment of seafarers in case of maritime accidents – pollution incidents and accidents, passenger claims, wreck removal or marine crimes. Taking into account the fact that multinational stakeholders are involved in shipping, development and implementation of universal statutory measures are essential to protect the safety of maritime workers and not to criminalise anyone.

Furthermore, the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies creates unprecedented claims. The industry must be prepared, otherwise, a great deal of maritime workers’ social and economic rights will be at stake, which will undoubtedly result in threats to maritime.

The reasons given above address the criticality of the Legal Committee for the ITF. The ITF makes sure that maritime workers have appropriate authorities corresponding to the level of statutory responsibilities that are required abide by the current international regulatory framework.
