Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC): undertakes environment related issues in shipping that affects not only the underwater ecosystem but also ashore and the air. This includes topics upholding sustainability in shipping, such as air pollution, including the reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions from ships, oil spill prevention and response, harmful aquatic invasive species and ballast water management, noxious substances transported by ships, waste generated in ship and its management, bilge water management, demolition of ships and shipping-sourced noise pollution. The ITF, speaking on behalf of international transport workers in the whole of the supply chain, advocates the pivotal importance of environmental protection. In relation to the sustainability of shipping, we believe that the roles of transport workers at every corner of the maritime sector must be acknowledged.
The ITF makes sure environmental protection strategies and regulations enshrine the safety and security of human lives at sea and ashore as priority. We also uphold the development of robust regulatory measures and enforcement scheme which prevents maritime workers’ rights being jeopardised from further career development and criminalisation.
