The 24 trade unionists from the Public Transport Operators Union (Puton) and Matatu Workers Union (MWU) discussed climate change and trade union organising.
The multi-million US dollar matatu and mini-bus industry employs over 200,000 workers. The MWU and Puton will soon be affiliated to the ITF and welcomed the timely seminar.
Henry Nyabuto Omoga, general secretary of the MWU, said: “This event was interactive and an eye-opener to matatu workers. I thank Cotu and the ITF for such enormous support, which will enable us to create awareness of climate change in this industry.”
Mbuthia Gakere, general secretary of Puton, added that his union appreciated the ITF’s assistance with providing educational and informative training like this, which would help enable the informal sector to realise its full potential.
Participants showed great interest in the ITF’s work and were keen to join the federation and benefit from the international solidarity of its 4.5 million members.
