Lília Cavalcanti, cabin crew with LATAM Airlines in Brazil, tells her personal story of passenger violence in the air. “There was turbulence and this passenger screams and jumps on top of me and I was frightened, scared, in shock. I was there caring for his safety and this passenger attacked me.” Thanks to union campaigning, the law was changed in Brazil, leading to 12-month flight-bans for violent passengers.

Care before Profit

As recently as 2023, 748 million people aged 15 and above were outside the labour force due to care responsibilities across the globe. A shocking yet unsurprising 708 million of these workers are
