ITF holds railway workshops in Turkey

news 07 May 2019

Over 100 railway workers in Turkey have taken part in two consecutive ITF workshops.

Running on 29-30 April and 2-3 May in Ankara, the participants discussed different types of privatisation, shared national experiences and challenges, discussed how to improve railway safety and organise workers at restructured companies.

All of the participants were from United Transport Workers' Union (BTS) and the Railway Workers' Trade Union of Turkey (DEMİRYOL-İŞ).

An ITF delegation also took part in International Workers’ Day celebrations on 1 May in Izmit, with the TURK-IS confederation.

David Gobé, chair of the ITF railway section said: “This was a great opportunity for railway workers in Turkey to share experiences, and for us to hear more about the challenges they are facing.

“The privatisation process is similar all over the world and the railway unions in Turkey are active and vibrant. We look forward to doing much more work together in the future.”
