I fully agree with the arguments for public ownership of urban transport, although I think it is pointless to wait for contracts to expire or for private companies to go bankrupt; in the absence of a strong political will for remunicipalisation or renationalisation, this will be no more than a pipe dream. We as unions must take advantage of the electoral processes and get involved in them so as to ensure that decision-making roles are filled by politicians with genuine convictions in support of this cause. This is no easy task, as it involves fighting directly against the political corruption that allowed the private sector to take control of urban transport, and the economic interests involved are huge, but it is not an impossible one – with the right alliances, we will be able to achieve it.
