I am in complete agreement with proposals 1 - 3. Unfortunately, transport for profit puts workers and users lives at risk,owing to the need of private owners to make huge profits. Often the necessary maintenance and safety procedures are delayed in order to keep the bus or minibus in operation for as long as possible. Often commuters are unable to access much needed private transport after certain hours because the vehicles are removed from their routes when it is perceived that demand is not as great as would be desired. This results in commuters having to hire taxis or take other buses and walk long distances to reach their homes, particularly workers whose jobs end late in the night. The potential for harm to commuters increases and the weight on their already weakened wages can be burdensome.Additionally, austerity measures , particularly under International Lending Agencies, promote privatisation of public transport rather than integration or returning private fleets and/or routes to public management. There appears sometimes to be a compromise to the austerity situation where workers are being offered the opportunity to take over the public and administer it as a 'Worker-Owned' Enterprise. Experience has shown that without concrete guarantees and contracts, a way is still found to divert business to large organisations and, or, the worker-owned company is given the scraps while meaningful work is passed to friends, colleagues, supporters. Public transport, owned and controlled by the public, with input from those directly impacted such as workers, trade unions and commuters is the fairest way to ensure effective and efficient transport for all.
