As part of the mission Mr Cotton visited the new international airport in Algiers and met with the Minister of Transportation and General Operations. He also saw Algeria’s ambitious plans to expand public transport through cable cars, tramways and subways.

Finally, Stephen Cotton met with the general secretary of the General Union of Algerian Workers’ (UGTA), Abdel Majeed Sidi Saeed, to discuss further ITF work in Algeria and support from the UGTA for the ITF Palestinian transport workers’ fund.

Stephen Cotton said: “I’ve learnt a huge amount on this visit. It’s great to see how our affiliates in Algeria are working hard to build up the role of women and young workers, to develop the union leaders of the future.

“The UGTA has shown it wants be at the forefront of building unions that respond to the needs of workers, develop strategies to combat changing economic challenges and offer the international solidarity that makes our movement uniquely powerful.”
