The meeting, Sustainable Partnerships in Shipping, brought together leading figures from across the world of seafaring and shipping to hear about the history – and the future – of cooperation between the two organisations.
A three-strong ITF delegation on a fact-finding and solidarity mission to Turkey has warned that the government there may be preparing a further wave of repression against trade unionists.
The ITF has produced a new booklet to assist unions which organise informal transport workers, based on the learning gained from its three-year project to improve the capacity of unions to organise and represent these workers.
The ITF has produced a toolkit for its seafarer unions to help them lobby governments to implement international guidelines to prevent the unfair treatment of seafarers following accidents and pollution at sea.

An ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) mission to Turkey today warned that the government there may be preparing a further wave of repression against trade unionists. The warning comes as the delegation was prevented from visiting unjustly imprisoned union colleagues, and amid continuing police violence against union members.
The ITF is backing its union ASSA (the Asociación Sindical de Sobrecargos de Aviación) in Mexico, which has announced strike action next week if Aeromar continues to refuse to negotiate the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
