ITF backs campaign to keep Mexico City's trolleybuses

ニュース

At a forum for alternative, efficient and friendly transport in Mexico City, a campaign was launched to demand the modernisation of the trolleybus, light rail and electric taxi systems.

Benito Bahena y Lome, general secretary of the ITF union Alianza de Tranviarios de México-ATM (ATM), explained that the elimination of the trolleybus network would create serious problems including hundreds of maintenance workers losing their jobs and price increases.

You can sign the petition to save the trolleybuses here.

Antonio Rodriguez Fritz, ITF Americas’ regional secretary, said: “The Mexico City government has constantly attacked the trade union organisation that has been promoting ecological transport. The ITF will support the ATM.

“Local authorities need to understand the importance of modernising the trolleybus system in order to promote healthy transportation and the right to mobility of the people of Mexico City."

The forum also denounced attacks against members of the ATM, which the ITF highlighted in May 2016.
