Aisles and desks were empty at Ezeiza Buenos Aires Airport, a key hub for flights in South America. Meanwhile LAN and TAM workers in Brazil met to plan their response to company plans to cut costs that workers believe are putting workers under dangerous strain and passengers at risk.
ITF civil aviation secretary Gabriel Mocho said: “For years workers at the LATAM group have been pursuing pay justice and improved conditions. The company’s response has been to relentlessly seek cuts and improved returns for investors, and to dismiss unions leaders such as Jimena Lopez in Ecuador and Eiko Murata in Peru. The company is sitting on a volcano of dissent across its entire workforce. It urgently needs to face up to facts and address their grievances.”
He continued: “The ITF’s LATAM network stands ready to assist with genuine negotiations to address the worrying problems reported by workers across the LATAM group.”
