The future of Australia’s live sheep export trade is again under the spotlight with the release today of appalling new footage that highlights the dreadful conditions endured by both animals and the workers on board the Awassi Express, a Panamanian-registered Flag-of-Convenience vessel that operates with little scrutiny on harrowing voyages to the Middle East.

After more than 11 months at anchor in Sfax, Tunisia, the remaining 10 seafarers (6 Egyptian, 2 Indian and 2 Bangladeshi) on board the vessel MV Qaaswa finally departed for home on 30th April 2018, after they had been systematically abandoned by the vessel owner Alco Shipping Services, a company based in the United Arab Emirates.

On 24 April 2018 at 105th session of the IMO Legal Committee, an ITF delegation, including SRI, announced the plan for the upcoming regional workshop on the fair treatment of seafarers, in coordination with the Government of the Philippines in July 2018.

On 24 April 2018, during the 105th session of Legal Committee at main hall of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), an International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) delegation delivered a presentation regarding ongoing cases and outcomes of the latest data analysis of the ILO/IMO database on reported incidents of abandonment of seafarers.

The International Transport Worker’s Federation (ITF) continues to pledge solidarity to the RMT and its campaign to fight for better working conditions on the UK railways.
