The ITF has urged the Indonesian president to intervene over the extension of the concession for the Jakarta International Container Terminal that has been granted to Hutchison Port Holdings by the Indonesia Port Company (IPC).

A group of trade unionists sponsored by the ETF – the ITF’s European arm – submitted a formal request to the European Commission on 13 July to launch a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) called Fair Transport Europe.

Concerted action by the ITF and maritime unions on two continents in one week was successful in bringing support to seafarers working and living in sub-standard conditions, and in spreading the word about the role of trade unions in protecting seafarers and their rights under international maritime law.

Dockworkers who are members of trade unions affiliated to the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) are in training in St Lucia this week on a new tool to assist them in bargaining, negotiating, campaigning and organising in their ports.

Activists trained by the ITF and its affiliate Unite the Union have succeeded in setting up a hub office within Immingham Port – one of four major ports on the UK’s Humber river, Europe’s eighth largest port complex – to organise and forge alliances across job sectors.

Operations resumed in Callao, Peru’s largest port terminal on Friday, as operator APMT stepped “back from crisis" and signed a two year agreement delivering improved pay, health and union benefits for some 650 port workers. Members of the ITF-affiliated SUTRAMPORCPC union returned to work on 5 June following 24 days of strike action over fair pay and against anti-union discriminatory practices.
