The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) express their profound shock at today’s serious rail accident in Toledo, Spain, and extend their deepest condolences and solidarity to everyone affected by this tragic event.

Reports state that at least 64 people are believed to have died, with dozens injured – numbers that may rise.

The ITF and ETF join calls for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and to determine where responsibility may lie. This is essential to prevent a tragedy of this magnitude from happening again.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident – on behalf of the ITF, we extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone who has lost their loved ones and we stand in solidarity with all those injured and affected,” said ITF Railway Section Committee Chair, Julio Sosa.

“At this difficult time, the ITF stands united with railway workers and their communities in Spain. We will continue to follow developments closely and stand ready to offer our support.”

The ITF and ETF’s thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones, and also the railway workers and emergency responders working in extremely difficult circumstances to assist passengers and support their colleagues.

“Our hearts are with everyone affected by this terrible accident – the ETF stands alongside railway workers and their unions in Spain during this deeply distressing time,” said ETF Rail Chair, Gerhard Tauchner.

“We join our affiliated rail unions in reiterating that railway safety is an absolute priority for workers and rail users – that’s why we will continue to demand adequate safety conditions and a thorough investigation to establish the facts, strengthen prevention and ensure a safe railway for everyone.”

The ITF and ETF stand together in solidarity with our Spanish affiliates and the wider railway community. We will continue to monitor developments, and we reaffirm our commitment to the safety, dignity and wellbeing of transport workers and passengers everywhere.
