It is with deep sadness that the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) marks the passing of Peter McEwen (MBE MNM) a tireless advocate for seafarers around the world. Throughout his career, Peter made significant contributions both within Nautilus International and the wider international maritime community.
Peter passed away peacefully on 6 September 2025, aged 76, surrounded by his family.
Peter’s journey began when he joined the union’s staff in 1978, and moved up to serve as Deputy General Secretary of Nautilus International, where his leadership shaped union strategy and steered numerous impactful initiatives. Upon his retirement in 2014, colleagues paid tribute to a modernising force within the union and a trusted mentor – one remembered as both visionary and collaborative. Among his most impactful achievements was the creation of Mariners’ Park, Nautilus’s flagship welfare facility.
He played an instrumental role in the development of the Maritime Labour Convention, a landmark achievement that continues to protect and uplift seafarers and mariners worldwide.
Beyond union leadership, Peter continued his service as Chair of the Seafarers Hospital Society until 2022. He then remained active as a Trustee of the MNAOA Supplementary Pension Scheme until early 2025.
In recognition of his service to the maritime community, Peter was honoured with an MBE in 2010. Ever modest, he attributed the award to the strength of the collective:
“I believe that this award is a real recognition for the team we have at Nautilus International – the staff, our Committee, and their commitment to the membership and the people we care for.”
Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the ITF, said today: “Peter McEwen was more than a colleague – he was a friend, a steadfast steward of seafarers’ rights, and a guiding light in the global campaign for decent work at sea. His leadership helped shape not only Nautilus International and the ITF, but also the broader maritime welfare community. The ITF family mourns his loss and extends heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and our Nautilus colleagues and maritime community.”

His legacy will endure in the lives of the countless seafarers whose rights and dignity he helped to secure.”
