It’s the latest move in the ITF campaign to secure justice for dockworkers and is designed to send a powerful message to the directors of port management company ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services, Inc) that they have to change the way they treat their workers in Indonesia, Madagascar – and beyond.
Right now in Indonesia children have been forced to drop out of school because ICTSI – one of the world's most profitable stevedoring companies – is targeting their parents for joining their union’s fight for a living wage.
ICTSI is systematically undermining the wages and conditions at the waterfront in Jakarta, forcing workers into long, unsafe overtime simply to earn a living wage. FBTPI union members have been denied overtime by the company, and many are now unable to meet their basic expenses, resulting in workers taking children out of school and being evicted from their homes. ICTSI is punishing these workers for standing up.

ITF president and chair of the ITF dockers’ section, Paddy Crumlin, stated: “ICTSI is a rogue employer. It’s driving down wages, it’s driving down conditions. Enough is enough. The ITF and its member unions are holding it to account. So far as we’re concerned its aggressive treatment of workers stops here.”
The ITF is calling on ICTSI to immediately stop targeting union members and to settle a collective agreement that guarantees workers a fair wage – without having to work excessive overtime – so their families can live with dignity and their children can go back to school.
