The risk
Warehouse workers may face increasing exposure to extreme temperatures and climate-related risks. Facilities such as uninsulated warehouses, loading docks and outdoor storage yards may expose workers to heat stress or cold stress depending on the climate and season.
Heat exposure is particularly dangerous in large distribution centres where ventilation may be inadequate and heavy physical labour is required. Workers performing tasks such as manual handling or order picking may face increased risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Cold storage warehouses present a different set of risks, including frostbite, hypothermia and musculoskeletal strain due to working in low-temperature environments. Workers may experience long-term health effects if protective equipment or rest breaks are insufficient.
Climate change is also increasing the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, storms and wildfires. Warehouses located in vulnerable regions may face operational disruptions that expose workers to additional safety risks during emergency situations.
The ITF Warehousing Principles highlight the importance of a just transition towards climate-resilient logistics operations that protect workers’ saftety and health.
