Hundreds of thousands of workers on the world’s roads and railways will join together next week for seven days of action backing safe, ecological and publicly-accountable transport.

Leading representatives of the International Dockworkers Council (IDC) and the International Transport Workers Federation Dockers Section (ITF) met in Liverpool on Friday 25 September, before the 20th anniversary commemoration of the Liverpool Dockworkers strike.

ITF unions from Venezuela and Guyana met in Rio de Janeiro to debate the recent flare-up in the century-old border dispute and signed a joint declaration calling for a diplomatic solution.

A group of European citizens, transport workers and union members have launched a new European Citizens’ Initiative – Fair Transport Europe – which calls on the European Commission (EC) to propose measures for ensuring fair competition in transport and to guarantee equal treatment of workers.

The ITF-affiliated Association des Chauffeurs des Poids Lourds au Rwanda (ACPLRWA) this week presented a memorandum containing East African transport workers’ observations, suggestions and demands, to the Rwandan ministry in charge of the East African Community (EAC), ministry of public services and the national police.
