The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) is pushing for a Australian senate inquiry into flag of convenience (FOC) shipping following a damning exposé on Australia’s Four Corners television programme into three deaths at sea on board the MV Sage Sagittarius. The ITF has welcomed news received over the weekend from its affiliate the Railwaymen’s Union of Malaya (RUM) that Abdul Razak, the union’s president, has been reinstated with immediate effect by KTMB (Malayan Railways Ltd).

Commenting on last week’s death of a driver crushed by a container reportedly falling from a lorry exiting Doha port, ITF president Paddy Crumlin said: “Injuries associated with containers are all too common. They can occur throughout the supply chain –on ships, in ports, on road and rail. There is a deep and constant need for oversight, care and regulation.”

The ITF has backed the Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union (FAU), and appealed to the head of the airline to address workers’ concerns over their conditions.

The ITF has established a special fund for donations to trade unions in Nepal following the earthquake in April that claimed the lives of thousands of people there.

The two global organisations representing public transport operators and workers have joined to tackle violence on urban transport networks.
