The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) is reiterating its case regarding the possible risks to safety posed by the Panama Canal’s new locks.

The ITF has asked the prime minister of the Solomon Islands to intervene immediately over the ‘extraordinary’ recent anti-worker and anti-union actions of the chief executive of the Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA).

An ITF truck drivers’ union has successfully fought for the Kenyan and South Sudan governments to respond to its concerns over its members’ security, following the murders of 10 Kenyan truck drivers in two incidents in South Sudan in March.

Speaking on Workers’ Memorial Day, ITF president Paddy Crumlin said: “Workers and their unions come together today not just to remember the injured and dead but also to fight for the living. That fight is renewed every working day, and will be until every workplace is a safe one, and every worker who sets out for work makes it home at the end of the day.”

Senior representatives of the transport sector in the global trade union movement have condemned National Express over on-going labour rights abuses at its US school bus subsidiary, Durham School Services.

The International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) have agreed to invest USD 3 million in Ukrainian marine training. The donation is being made from the Seafarers’ Employment Promotion Fund (SEPF), a unique training fund sourced from collective bargaining agreements negotiated by the two organisations.

The ITF (International Transport Workers Federation) has commissioned an in depth study into the implementation and enforcement of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC), which came into force in August 2013. The study will be carried out by Seafarers’ Rights International (SRI).
