Activists trained by the ITF and its affiliate Unite the Union have succeeded in setting up a hub office within Immingham Port – one of four major ports on the UK’s Humber river, Europe’s eighth largest port complex – to organise and forge alliances across job sectors.

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and Seafarers’ Rights International (SRI) report progress being made on the urgent issue of the criminalisation of seafarers. This follows the positive reception from the IMO’s (International Maritime Organization) Legal Committee to a paper co-sponsored by the ITF, the International Federation of Shipmasters' Associations (IFSMA), the Comité Maritime International (CMI) and InterManager.

Geneva-based United Nations agency the ILO (International Labour Organization) today found Qatar guilty of allowing its state-owned airline, Qatar Airways, to violate international and national agreements and institutionalise discrimination. The civil aviation branch of the ITF-affiliated federation of transport CGT in France has condemned the award of the French Legion d'Honneur to Akbar al-Baker, Qatar Airways group chief executive, for 'services to aviation', because of the airline’s discriminatory and unacceptable treatment of its staff.

The ITF-affiliated Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) in Uganda succeeded in completing its elections on 10 June without police disruption or presence after a public pledge by the inspector general of police on Sunday that he would not allow the force to operate outside the law.

The ITF’s four affiliates in Nepal are engaged in an intense rebuilding effort following the country’s devastating earthquake on 25 April, which is estimated to have claimed the lives of over 8,600 people and injured around 17,000.

The first strike held by a Libyan civil aviation union - which affected all the country's airport operations - was suspended on 1 June after one week to allow injured people to leave for medical treatment.
