Representatives of European maritime workers and shipowners have made a solidarity visit to Apostolos Mangouras, captain of the sunk Prestige oil tanker, who aged 81 has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Spanish supreme court.

Visitors to a Bollywood film festival in Madrid over the weekend were met by a truck featuring a masked and gagged cabin crew member. The truck was driving around the perimeter of the Qatar Airways (QR) sponsored International Indian Film Academy Awards as part of a protest against the company.

ITF and ETF leaders have vowed that the work of trade unions as guarantors and defenders of tolerance and workers’ rights will continue anew after today’s United Kingdom vote to leave the European Union.

Commenting on this morning’s result, ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) president Paddy Crumlin said: “As democrats and trade unionists we respect the decision, hairsbreadth narrow though it was. As democrats and trade unionists we also pledge ourselves to working to preserve the gains made in worker protections in the last decades, and to continue to fight for more.

Unions have got less than two weeks to protest against Korea’s potentially harsh sentencing of a union president.

The ITF is welcoming the announcement made at the ILO (International Labour Organization) International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva on Friday that could lead to the creation of new international standards to protect those working in global supply chains.
