Dockers and their unions from Abidjan to Australia, Cyprus to Canada, New Zealand to Norway were among thousands from ports in over 50 countries across six continents who took part in the first international dockers’ action day on 7 July.

ITF general secretary Stephen Cotton said: “On behalf of the five million workers we represent in 150 countries, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our union brother Philando Castile.

An ITF union leader in Colombia has hailed the country’s peace deal as a “beacon, a major step in the right direction”, while remembering the “hundreds of thousands who have laid down their lives to reach this point”.

Commenting on last night’s attacks on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, ITF general secretary Steve Cotton said: “Once again terrorists have sought to weaken society by a cowardly attack on unarmed citizens gathered at a transport centre.
