ITF message to seafarers: Enough is enough, crew change now

15 Jun 2020

Seafarers, we know that you, your loved ones, and your friends have had enough.

You have the right to return home. While many countries have slowly started to ease coronavirus pandemic restrictions after 2-3 months of lockdown and are now reopening stores and services and allowing people to meet friends and families, hundreds of thousands of seafarers (you) worldwide remain stuck on board, unable to go ashore, seek medical attention or return home.

Many of you were on board for 6-10 months and now an additional 2-3 months because you had to extend your contracts due to travel restrictions and a lack of flights. Despite all the support from the shipping industry and the United Nations and their agencies, you continue to be treated as second class citizens. You are the same seafarers that governments have hailed as “key workers” vital to the global supply chain and the delivery of essential materials and goods.

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and our member unions have forewarned governments and the industry that after today, the 15 June 2020, that it will no longer be acceptable that seafarers are forced to continue to work.

If you have finished your contract, then you have the right to be repatriated. If this is not possible then you would remain on board as a passenger. The consequences could be that the ship is unable to sail if the manning level is inadequate, but that is not the responsibility of the seafarers.

We are clear – if a seafarer wants off a ship, then the ITF, our affiliate unions and the ITF inspectorate will do everything we can to assist them. We know that you need to get off these ships, and we will help you to do so where we can.

You have done your job, performed your duties, and accepted that you were unable to return home in the beginning in order to contain the spread of Covid-19 – but no more. Enough is enough.

its been 255 days, there are lot of talks but nobody is doing anything. owners are having a nice time making profits and the organisations which are there for welfare of seafarers they're not doing anything. mlc also extended contracts till 14months max. i mean wtf! we're human beings too, have family, friends... more than 4 months without stepping foot on land. Singapore MPA also denied our releif just because people have not completed atleast 14 months (although 2 crew here have already completed 13 months, 11 already extended 3-4 months extra)

To All of those who commented here in negative thinking I only say 1 thing ! If you expect everything done for you by somebdoy else than don t complain pls! This is a real good thing the ITF is doing now , pressing port authorities, governments and owners to solve our problem. The only thing you cand do if you really want to go home is don t sign extensions and call the itf inspectors. If you are a slave and afraid than you don t have any right to complain, so shut the f*** up and wait until the companies and the governments will take pity on you and send you home ! what I know from my experience most of the masters and chief engineers are companies dogs so don t go for them for guidance, they will do and say anything to discourage you to fight for your rights, i bet my money most of them have more than 9 months on board and still going ...maybe waiting for some ratings who are really tired to complain to the authorities so they can go home also, because they will never lift a finger by themselves afraid that will never find another job!

There are scary for covid. Just from home and comfortable place is easy to write how they are hard trying. At real Itf is useless! With internet is possible to be in touch with a lot of vessels for control but it will be already real actions. Owners didn't pay them for it. Shame!

I have completed 12+ month onboard but company still saying they are trying there best to sign off me, recently I got one month extension letter ,which I refused to sign and I asked them to mention specific date of my sign off but they didn't and pressurise me to sign that letter, after 7 july my ship will sail to africa and eta wil be 27 july at that time I will be almost 14 month on board .

What a self-serving, wanting-to-look-like-hero in front of seafarers and irresponsible message. We all know everyone is helpless in this present situation because of country/port restrictions that make it difficult to carry out crew change. Very convenient for an organization who just gets wealthy off seafarers blood and sweat.

The Singapore authorities pretend to take action but create such big obstructions that impossible to follow requirements.
China on one hand declares its free from virus, on the other hand do not allow any crew change

Support ITF and stop work
3 months 4 weeks ago

The only option for us right now is give written notice to company saying you can no longer give service and stop the work and stay in your cabins.. you will get paid as long as you are onboard.. If vessel goes below safe manning requirements report to port state control and flag state and ITF.. More people stop the work more the owners and government are pressurized for crew change..

I am working in Saudi Arabia, One of the most profitable oil supply areas in The World.
And I would like The ITF to Think about the following.
Here if we are onboard 3 to 6 in this time, we don't have shore leave , we are not allowed any type of recreation or relaxation ashore, also these are not passenger ships, they are small Vessels, and, if you are lucky you have a port hole, that cannot open.
No mobile signal no television no books unless you bring your own.
And now many of my colleges have over 9 months some over a year, under these conditions.
Please do something about this you have the power to do so, I am a Captain.
Can I work with following The International regulations , without a CoC, the answer is NO.
Then why are these Governments allowed to keep taking away our life or family or writes?
