A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has hit Morocco, with the epicentre 75km west of Marrakesh, killing at least 820 people, injuring hundreds, damaging buildings and sending people fleeing in alarm into the streets for safety.

The quake struck at 23:11 local time on Friday and was followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. “The ITF extend our solidarity to the people of Morocco,” said Paddy Crumlin, ITF President. “We are devastated watching the fallout from the earthquake, seeing the immense loss of life and incredible damaged caused. We stand ready to support our affiliated unions and work arm in arm to help with the colossal task of providing relief and then rebuilding.”

ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton said: “Our thoughts are with the Moroccan people. This morning we have conveyed a message of solidarity to our friends in Morocco. Through this devastation we are determined to forge stronger links with our unions in Morocco and demonstrate our solidarity and support in any way we can.”
