Powerful earthquake hits Morocco, ITF pledges solidarity

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has hit Morocco, with the epicentre 75km west of Marrakesh, killing at least 820 people, injuring hundreds, damaging buildings and sending people fleeing in alarm into the streets for safety. 

The quake struck at 23:11 local time on Friday and was followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. The Moroccan Government’s interior ministry has said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant. There are also reports of families trapped under the rubble of their homes. 

“The ITF extend our solidarity to the people of Morocco,” said Paddy Crumlin, ITF President. “We are devastated watching the fallout from the earthquake, seeing the immense loss of life and incredible damaged caused. We stand ready to support our affiliated unions and work arm in arm to help with the colossal task of providing relief and then rebuilding.” 

ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton said: “Our thoughts are with the Moroccan people. This morning we have conveyed a message of solidarity to our friends in Morocco. Through this devastation we are determined to forge stronger links with our unions in Morocco and demonstrate our solidarity and support in any way we can.” 

The 46th ITF Congress will take place in Marrakech, Morocco, on 13-19 October 2024.
