Statement: In Solidarity with the People of Venezuela

Actualités Communiqué de presse

An emergency fund to support transport workers and their unions in Venezuela in the wake of the devastating earthquake has been launched by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).

The ITF expresses its deep solidarity with the people of Venezuela at a time of great sorrow and desperation in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 24 June 2026.

As the world has watched heroic rescue efforts and a steadily rising death toll, the ITF extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of victims, and it sends its unwavering support to the communities that have suffered from this tragedy.

Today, the ITF launches the ITF Venezuela Earthquake Fund to support affected workers through our Venezuelan affiliate, Federación Bolivariana de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras del sector Transporte, Afines y Conexos (the Bolivarian Federation of Transport and Amalgamated Workers).

“To every person and community affected by this catastrophic earthquake, the ITF extends its deepest condolences and stands alongside you in solidarity – and that’s why we are calling on our affiliated transport unions around the world to do everything they can to help by contributing to our Venezuela Earthquake Fund,” said ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton.

ITF President, Paddy Crumlin, said: “Today, more than ever, is the time to demonstrate that international solidarity transcends borders and strengthens the hope of those facing adversity. Our support for the workers and communities of Venezuela is and always will be unwavering.”

More than 1,700 people are believed to have died so far, with more than 5,000 injured and nearly 16,000 displaced in the wake of the twin earthquakes. The humanitarian crisis is deepening by the day, with countries around the world assisting Venezuela through the deployment of rescue personnel, rescue dogs to find trapped victims, and supplies.

“The workers and communities of Venezuela have already suffered long enough, facing a struggle for self-determination and many years of unjustified trade embargoes,” said ITF Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, Pablo Moyano

“Now, in this time of great need, we say to the people and transport workers of Venezuela: the ITF is here for you.”

Edgar Diaz, ITF Regional Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, said: “We pay tribute to all those who have shown great courage in risking their lives to help the victims of this disaster.

“The ITF is ready to do all it can to ensure that the unity, cooperation and commitment of transport workers and working people across the world will help support their recovery. Every donation – no matter the size – will help transport workers rebuild their lives and their communities.”

In recognition of the struggles faced by ITF affiliates and transport workers across the Latin America and Caribbean region, the ITF will be holding its next Executive Board meeting in Mexico City in October 2026.

If you’re able to, please donate to the ITF Solidarity Fund for Venezuela now.
