The first global employment report on urban public transport in over a decade, launched by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) in partnership with UITP - the International Association of Public Transport - exposes a 2.4 million job shortfall across the sector. Despite a 20% growth in the workforce since 2009, critical roles like drivers, engineers, and EV specialists remain understaffed, with retirements looming and youth participation declining. The report calls for immediate investment in decent work, inclusive workforce planning, and gender equity – positioning public transport workers at the heart of climate action and urban resilience.
