Workers in Fiji are campaigning to secure a Living Wage that enables them to live a decent and dignified life.
The campaign will ramp up tomorrow (Saturday 15 August 2026) when Fijian trade unions hold signature-collecting events for petitions in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka.
ITF Asia Pacific Regional Secretary Scott McDine today said that transport workers across the region were right behind the campaign.
The current minimum wage in Fiji is $5.00 (FJD) per hour, or just $2.25 (USD).
“Continuing to suppress the minimum wage at such a low level is government-mandated exploitation, locking people into poverty.
“The failure of wages in Fiji to keep pace with the cost of living is a major reason for the continual drain of Fijian workers moving to other countries.
“It is essential that Fijian workers are able to earn a living wage that enables them to meet the basic cost of living, and to live with dignity.
“I urge all Fijians to get behind the campaign and sign the FTUC petition.”
Mr McDine said multinational employers were cynically using Fijian small businesses as a shield to protect themselves from having to pay decent wages and conditions to local workers.
“Raising the safety net level of pay to a living wage will enable more Fijians to spend money on essential goods and services, and will ultimately be positive boost for the Fijian economy and for local businesses.
“The time for excuses is over. The time for a Living Wage in Fiji is now.”
