“Why don’t you just leave him?” is a common response to women struggling with an abusive partner. But it’s not as easy as that. Cultural oppression and financial dependence can often stop Indian women from escaping their tormentors, as a number of brave survivors explain in this film. Often, the workplace offers respite and support, as well as financial independence. What we should be asking in response to these women is:
what is our collective role as a society to stop this injustice?
