-----------
Cabin and cockpit crew have experienced and reported aircraft fume and cabin-air contamination events for many years. These events can involve headaches, dizziness, irritation and other symptoms.
A new aviation oil, Eastman Turbo Oil 2330 (ETO 2330), is being introduced specifically for aircraft APUs. Eastman states that turbo oil can enter the cabin-air system and that ETO 2330 has an “inoffensive odor profile” designed to reduce cabin-odour events and related unplanned maintenance.
BUT LESS ODOUR DOES NOT MEAN LESS EXPOSURE.
If oil or its heated or degraded products enter the cabin air, cabin crew must be able to recognise and report the event. The introduction of ETO 2330 must not result in fewer reported events simply because they are harder to smell.
TAKE ACTION
We are demanding an investigation and safety and occupational-health review of the use of ETO 2330, with particular attention to the potential consequences of reduced odour detectability. The introduction of ETO 2330 must not compromise cabin crew health or the effective recognition, reporting and investigation of cabin-air contamination events.
Your support can put pressure on the relevant authorities to take action. Show your solidarity with flight crew – we all have the right to breathe safe air at work.
