Structural Risks

Structural risks in transport are driven by how work is organised – across mobile workplaces, isolated environments and fragmented subcontracting chains. These factors can obscure accountability, limit oversight and increase companies’ exposure to human rights risks across their supply chains.

To see more specific structural risks in maritime, road transport, and warehousing and logistics, refer to the Risks by Transport Sector section of this guidance.

Explore structural risks
High mobility work
Transport is inherently mobile, international and often delivered through complex subcontracting chains.
Subcontracting and precarious employment
Serious safety and health risks faced by transport workers are intensified by fragmented contracting arrangements.
Isolation and lone working
Isolation and lone working are defining feature of many transport occupations, presenting significant physical and psychological risks for transport workers.
