devices. The newly designed Archos 101 has seen many revamps and system improvements from the previous device the Archos
43 as 101 will be running on the ever expansive and extremely popular Android 2.2 system interface.
This will allow for downloading of apps, games, music and software directly to your tablet with any active internet connection. Andriod 2.2 even allows users to access staple Google
features like Gmail, Gtalk and the ever expanding and open Android marketplace.
With over 80% of quality apps free to users it will have quite the heads up over the costly Apple App Store.
The web browser is nothing short of amazing as it will be a feast for the
eyes on the 10 inch backlit LCD screen. It supports a full html web browser but to hasten the internet experience many websites have
opted to making tablet friendly pages specifically designed for the device and others like it.
Image sharing and saving has never been easier as you simply
touch and hold your finger on the image to be saved
and download it directly to your tablet; if this worries you in regards to memory usage simply pop in any micro SD card and up your storage to whatever desired level you choose (however most
will find the 8gb storage adequate).
For social networking you can take the experience even further by using
multiple options like cropping photo's, editing them and even posting directly to Facebook or Twitter.
This dramatically cuts time wasted uploading jpeg files to your
desktop for uploading on social sites later. With the optional usb cord it can be connected to your home desktop or laptop for many data
functions like streaming video's, file transfers and even quick system updates downloaded directly from the Archos
provider site. The newest feature you may have noticed is the front
facing web cam, this welcome addition will now allow users to use services like Skype and OovoO to video chat with friends
and family much like Apple's Facetime. Overall the
device sports a thin sleek design, competitive price and a open marketplace only time will tell if the
this particular tablet will truly be a threat to the iPad but to those who want the
iPad functions without paying the hefty iPad price the Archos 101 would definitely qualify as solid buy.
To sum this long review up. If and when you get your Archos 101, you must
upgrade the firmware. Restart your Archos and check for Archos updates again. Next, you need to go to your computer and check
out ArchosFans.com to check on other upgrades you need to get for your
Archos. In particular, they will tell you how you can download Android Market on your tablet as it doesn't come pre-installed.
Also, if your Archos isn't moving as fast as you'd like it to, you can change the settings on your Archos to "Overdrive" instead of "Optimal." You can find this by going to Power
Management on your Archos. Lastly, register your Archos and buy the optional
plug in for your Video Player to play additional movies.
Although it still seems limited. I downloaded VPlayer from Android Market and
the paid version of $4.99 plays everything. Think VLC player that plays everything on your PC
except the VPlayer is for your Tablet. I hope this is of some help.
