More than 3000 union members in British Colombia are making a stand against violence. The 3200 urban transport workers decided enough was enough, especially when they realised they had the highest assaults per capita in transit in Canada. The leadership of CAW 111 realised the key was involving workers in each of the depots, to find ways of combating violence by passengers. After challenging the company on the increasing level of assaults, a committee with members of the Local 111 leadership, and employer representatives, was formed to seek solutions.
These included:To date, the campaign has advanced to include a high profile lobby of members of parliament to amend the criminal code. Workers are supported by the committee and their leadership in simple actions such as wearing a ‘No Violence in the Workplace’ pin as part of their uniform, and informing the public of a zero tolerance to violence in their workplace.
The union has also maintained a political lobby regarding the ‘More Buses Now’ campaign as the 20 buses they got are but a fraction of the number needed.
The committee has also agreed to a pilot project to install cameras in buses to help identify passengers who become violent or harass the membership.
