The ITF Civil Aviation Section celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. This industry is in the midst of a lull, buffeted by the effects of the financial crisis.

We look back at the history of the section, and there’s plenty of encouragement to be found amidst the gloom. History shows us that aviation has its cyclical ups and downs; what’s  important is to keep organising and bargaining through the downturn. With the hard work of our affiliates, the effects on workers can be minimised.

The Dockers’ Section is also working positively through the financial crisis. By working constructively with the big employers, the global network terminals, unions have a better chance of keeping jobs. And we have a report from Cochin port, in India, of a
successful negotiation with an employer.

The financial crisis is not the only threat to jobs: the issue of climate change isn’t going away. At a recent transport industry event, climate change was seen as the biggest challenge for the future, and arguably a bigger priority for business than the current financial woes. We have a special report from this event, the International Transport Forum, where workers’ issues were worryingly, if unsurprisingly, sidelined. And we have an update on union activity for the climate change event in Copenhagen this December.
