The starting point for bargaining on HIV/AIDS
The key principles behind the code are:
- Recognition of HIV/AIDS as a workplace issue
- Non-discrimination
- Gender equality
- Healthy work environment
- Social dialogue
- No HIV screening for employment purposes
- Confidentiality
- Continuation of employment relationship
- Prevention
- Care and support
The ILO code of practice on HIV/AIDS and the world of work has been agreed by international governments, employers' organisations and trade union bodies - the three constituents of the ILO. The full code provides detailed explanations of these principles and guidelines for developing workplace policies.
With its clear guidelines and political weight, the code is an ideal starting point for negotiating workplace policies and HIV/AIDS clauses for collective bargaining agreements. Most ILO country offices provide assistance to labour centres, trade unions and employers' organisations in developing tailor-made workplace policies. These take into account national legislation as well as country and industry specific issues.
