Matthew Allen, Zenkoku Ippon Tokyo General Union

We in the UK live in a safe place not affected by earthquakes and tsunamis so we cannot imagine what it is like for you in Japan also with the nuclear problems as well. We see it on television just like we have seen past natural disasters and droughts in Africa in the past, and there is a tendency to become anaesthetised to it all. Our capitalist government and apologists in the media see to that. However it is only the Trade Unions that steer us away from that thinking and make us aware that ordinary working class people are suffering and are the people who lose most in these disasters.

Geoff Haigh, PCS

Suzana Artukovic Vuksan, Croatia Airlines Cabin Crew Union (SKOZ)

Dear Brothers & Sisters of Japan

…We stood in our homes, unable to move, not comprehending what was unfolding before our eyes at first, and as the reality and gravity of what nature had unleashed upon your nation became clearer, we felt useless and helpless, and most of us still do, but we desire to do what little we can to lend support and comfort to you. You have shown the world how to work and re-build by your thrift and industry. You will do it again, but this time you have the  world with you, and that includes us Kiwis from New Zealand. It will be very challenging, but don't let this tragedy define your lives, but rather how you over-come it. The NZ Maori say Kia Kaha (Be Strong) and you will rise above it once again.

Our prayers go out to you all.

Ros Lowe, CFMEU

I am very saddened by the fact that the powerful earthquake and tsunami claimed more than ten thousand of innocent people's lives and destructed homes and infrastructure in the northern coastline of Japan, affecting millions of people's livelihoods. I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the families, friends and relatives who lost their loved ones by the natural disaster. It is not a national issue but a global issue pertinent to a climate change. Therefore, the global community needs to make concerted efforts and take joint actions to recover from its impact and normalise the desperate situation as quickly as possible. I also wish the people overcome the painful memories and difficulties as soon as possible through a national harmony and good wisdom.

In solidarity.

Pong-Sul Ahn, ILO, Bangkok

ILWU Canada extends our deepest sympathies and condolences to you, all our international brothers and sisters in Japan, who have faced the devastation and destruction this natural disaster has brought upon you. We are here in solidarity with you always, but even more so during this time of horrific tragedy. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mandy Chan, VP At-Large, ILWU Canada

It is very shocking to learn about the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami that badly wrecked Japan, causing great loss of the lives and property.

All India Railwaymen's Federation, on behalf of about 1.5 million Railwaymen joins you in expressing our most profound condolences and sympathies as well as expresses solidarity with the affiliates of the ITF in Japan as they strive to cope with this disaster which has had a grave impact.

During this difficult time, AIRF along with its affiliates, spread all over the Indian Railways, stand ready to extend their support and possible assistance to the affiliates of the ITF in Japan, as you srive to cope with the aftermath of this tragic event.

Shiva Gopal Mishra, General Secretary, All India Railwaymen's Federation

José Antonio Martinsanz, COMISIONES OBRERAS (CC.OO.) - ESPAÑA

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan in this horrible disaster. It is horrifying that such a wonderful country should suffer so much in the nuclear age.
