Background
On Friday 22 July two terrorist attacks were carried out in Norway, a country that rightly prides itself on its democracy and community relations. The first was a bombing in the capital, Oslo, the second a massacre of young people attending a summer camp. The alleged perpetrator appears to have been motivated by extreme right wing ideologies.
ITF president Paddy Crumlin and ITF general secretary David Cockroft sent the following message to the Norwegian trade union movement:
Dear Colleagues,
The ITF and ETF express their shock and solidarity with the Norwegian people after the bombing in central Oslo and the shootings on the Island Utøya. For one person to commit such an atrocity against young people who were attending a youth camp organised by the Norwegian Labour Party makes this murderous act even more incomprehensible. Many of those attending were part of the Norwegian trade union movement. There is no place in a civilized world for such a barbaric act.
We join all our affiliates in Norway, the Norwegian people and all those around the world in conveying our sympathies to the families affected.
The ITF stands ready to offer any support needed to all our affiliates in Norway.
Paddy Crumlin, ITF president
David Cockroft, ITF general secretary
Thank you for those kind words.
It is a tragedy that is difficult to comprehend.
Board and administration at NKF
Dear Paddy and David,
On behalf of the Norwegian Seafarers' Union, thank you for your kind words and support. It has truly been a trying time for us all. Many trade unions members, including our members, have been directly affected. However the sorrow is universal, all of Norway especially the labour movement has been rocked to its core by this tragedy that is so gruesome that there are no words to describe it.
Reports keep coming in on the uncomprehensible terror these young activists have had to endure. Many of the dead were found huddled together in an attempt to protect themselves and each other. I don't think we can ever truly comprehend the nightmare they have experienced, but the memory of these bright young people will forever be engraved in our mind and our hearts.
Thank you again for your support, it has been heartwarming to receive so much support, sympathy and solidarity from our international brothers and sisters.
In solidarity / Med vennlig hilsen,
Jacqueline Smith, Norsk Sjømannsforbund
