9 May 2005: French union and ITF affiliate FGTE-CFDT today unveiled a redevelopment plan to help coastal communities in the Seychelles affected by the Asian tsunami. The announcement came after a recently commissioned study by the union’s International Department highlighted the plight of the region’s local fishers in the wake of the disaster.
The study found that few fishers have been able to work since the tsunami, as most do not possess insurance cover to replace damaged fishing vessels. It also reported that spare parts for boat repair are in short supply across the island and locals do not possess the foreign currency to import these from elsewhere. The study recommended that the funds raised by FGTE-CFDT for the tsunami relief effort should be directed towards a sustainable long-term project, benefiting the local fishers of the Seychelles.
Key aspects of its proposal include the establishment of a small-scale local co-operative to manage and own seven newly purchased, five-metre boats with engines. These will be rented to local fishers for a modest monthly fee, with a future option for outright purchase and ownership. The money generated by this lease agreement will be used to acquire further boats. The co-operative will also manage a stock of engine parts and fishing equipment, purchased with funds donated by the FGTE.
In the project’s first phase, it is envisaged that the co-operative will work with local schools, running boat engineering and maintenance training. At a later stage, the study also recommends that the co-operative looks to marketing the products of its fisheries for export, in order to gain foreign currency.
FGTE-CFDT is currently in the process of collecting the money required to implement the study’s proposals. It intends to order the boats in June this year and expects delivery by September 2005.
