UPDATE: The talks are at a delicate stage still. Air NZ and the union have set out their respective positions on all outstanding issues and we are down to 4 out of 22 where we are in total disagreement. We are waiting to hear back from the airline, and we are trying to get them back into a mediation process to see if we can't resolve the small number of outstanding issues.

We expect we will have a further attempt at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. The airline is trying to get the dispute referred to a process we have here called facilitated bargaining which is a hybrid arbitration and conciliation process which invariably favours the employer.

The airline has all but given up negotiating as they wait to see whether they are going to get facilitated bargaining - there is a hearing on whether to refer the dispute to facilitated bargaining next Friday (26 June).

Solidarity for locked out cabin crew

Dear Friends

We understand from our affiliate the EPMU, that 240 of their cabin crew members with Air New Zealand’s subsidiary Zeal, have been locked out by the company following the issue of a strike notice by the Union for May 7-11.

Zeal flies into a number of destinations in Australia and the South Pacific Islands. Background information and online resources are available on the page below.

We would ask you to support these workers by taking any appropriate solidarity action, which would be within your country’s legal framework. The Union has also requested that any messages of solidarity and support should be sent to their Communications advisor at neale.jones@epmu.org.nz .

We hope you will assist these workers in whatever way you can.

In solidarity,

Gabriel Mocho
Civil Aviation Secretary

Support locked out cabin crew in New Zealand

POSTER Air New Zealand - Are ripping us off*
*
This advertisement appeared in New Zealand's main metropolitan dailies this morning.*

Air New Zealand has locked out 240 cabin crew who work for its subsidiary Zeal 320 Ltd. They are employed on wages and conditions that are inferior to those of their counterparts at Air New Zealand, despite doing the same work.

ITF unions in New Zealand are backing cabin crew members who have been locked out in a dispute with Air New Zealand.

The Maritime Union of New Zealand; Rail and Maritime Transport Union; National Distribution Union; Merchant Service Guild; and Aviation and Marine Engineers Association have all pledged support for the air crews, who are members of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU).
