Randall Howard
General Secretary
South African Transport & Allied Workers' Union (SATAWU)
22 March 2006
Dear Randall
On behalf of 5 million transport workers in 666 unions in 146 countries worldwide that the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) represents, we are sending this fraternal message of solidarity to you, members of SATAWU and all transport workers who are involved in a major dispute with Transnet.
We firmly believe that Transnet must negotiate in good faith with the unions on all conditions of employment should they wish to undertake a major restructuring programme. In particular, for those who will be transferred out of the company, their employment must be guaranteed for an agreed period with the unions.
The company must also share their vision for the future with the workers and their representatives on a regular basis. It should strive for economic growth and development for all citizens - not just focus on export oriented growth. Social needs of the poor must also be met. Furthermore, public transport, both long and short distance, must remain in the public hands, in our view.
We trust that under your leadership the unions will reach satisfactory conclusions in your negotiations with management. Should any further action be necessary from the ITF and its affiliates, please do not hesitate to contact us at anytime.Yours in solidarity
