The ITF has been helping seafarers since 1896 and today represents the interests of seafarers worldwide, of whom over 600,000 are members of ITF affiliated unions. The ITF is working to improve conditions for seafarers of all nationalities and to ensure adequate regulation of the shipping industry to protect the interests and rights of the workers. The ITF helps crews regardless of their nationality or the flag of their ship (See About this Section for more).

Seafarers’ union receives endorsement from Barack Obama
ITF affiliate the SIU (Seafarers’ International Union) has received a ringing endorsement from the Democratic Party candidate in the US presidential elections, Barack Obama.

ITF meets Hebei Spirit seafarers held in Korea
ITF officials have met with two merchant ship officers held in Korea as a result of an incident involving their vessel, the Hebei Spirit. This led to a major oil spill disaster in a Korean port last December.
