FIRST
HEARINGS IN SYDNEY
The first
public meetings of ICONS took place in Sydney on 24 July 2000.
The Commissioners
received presentations from a diverse group representing unions,
owners, private consultants and regulators.
Discussions
were wide ranging and involved presentations based on submissions

A number
of issues were covered:
- The future
role of IMO and the need for the organisation to have an enforcement
power;
- The maintenance
of standards and inspection rates for Port State Control;
- The
role and function of Class Societies;
- The
age of ships and possible disincentives for using old tonnage;
- Liability
and responsibility - breaking the corporate veil;
- The
nature and make up of crews; and
- The
human problems flowing from the abuse and maltreatment of
crews.
A transcript
of the proceedings is being prepared.
The Commission will re-convene in Singapore, Wednesday 26th
July .
