FIRST HEARINGS IN SYDNEY

The first public meetings of ICONS took place in Sydney on 24 July 2000.

The Commissioners received presentations from a diverse group representing unions, owners, private consultants and regulators.

Discussions were wide ranging and involved presentations based on submissions previously lodged. View submissions at: submissions.html

A number of issues were covered:

  • The future role of IMO and the need for the organisation to have an enforcement power;
  • The maintenance of standards and inspection rates for Port State Control;
  • The role and function of Class Societies;
  • The age of ships and possible disincentives for using old tonnage;
  • Liability and responsibility - breaking the corporate veil;
  • The nature and make up of crews; and
  • The human problems flowing from the abuse and maltreatment of crews.

A transcript of the proceedings is being prepared.
The Commission will re-convene in Singapore, Wednesday 26th July .
