Nepal
On 3 October, NETWON organised joint activity with the Indian Truck, Bus, Auto and Rickshaw Van Workers' HMS union at Kakarvitta on the border between India and Nepal to highlight the issues of road safety, cross-border problems and other health & safety issues. At a gate meeting in the Nepali border area, which followed a union rally, union leaders spoke on the different issues and the need to address road accidents. The joint cross-border activity was the first such activity in the history of the ITF Action Week for the unions. (Email report by Ajay Kumar Rai)

ITWAN started their activities for the Action Week on 30 September. A rally of 300 vehicles was held in Biratnagar to highlight the theme of 'no accident, no driver into custody'. During the rally workers distributed thousands of leaflets and chanted the union's demands for social security, job security, wage increase and other important issues. ITWAN is using the Action Week to campaign for fewer road accidents. Often transport workers are victimised as a result of road accidents. Further activity is planned by the union in other parts of the country. (Email report by Bidur Karki)

Thailand
ITF Thai affiliates, together with other trade union groups both in the private and public sectors in Thailand started their activity to mark the World Day for Decent Work, the ITF International Road Transport Action Week and to highlight the ongoing ITF QPS (Quality Public Services) campaign in the morning of 7 October by gathering in front of the United Nations Building in Bangkok. Activists then took part in a demonstration to the government house to express their demands for decent work for all workers and to urge the government to adjust the national minimum wage and the minimum salary as promised to workers in their election campaign. To mark the World Day for Decent Work, ITF Thai affiliates also held placards during the demonstration with messages such as 'DHL Respect', 'DHL needs decent work' and 'DHL - we expect better'.

As part of the QPS campaign in Thailand, ITF Thai affiliates, together with other local GUFs such as PSI, ICEM, BWI, IMF, EI, UNI, jointly submitted their charter of demands concerning quality public services to the Prime Minister and government. SERC (State Enterprise Workers’ Relation Confederation) and SRUT (State Railway Workers’ Union of Thailand) also submitted their appeal against the unfair dismissal of 13 union leaders. Both submissions were made through the Deputy Prime Minister who represented the government at the rally at government house. (Email report by Su-angcana Tungworachet)

Lithuania
At noon on 7 October, union activists came together to participate a rally in the government square in Vilnius. The rally, which was organised by the three national confederations - including Solidarumas of which ITF affiliate the Lithuanian Transport Workers' Federation is a member - highlighted the unions' demands for an increase in minimum wages. Currently, wages and social payments are tied to a minimum level which is set by the government. Trade unionists also engaged two special buses to go around the city of Vilnius for several hours to raise public awareness about the issues. Media coverage was good. World Day for Decent Work
7 October 2011 has been designated the 4th World Day for Decent Work. Originally chosen by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), it has now been adopted as a common day by the entire Global Unions family to demonstrate the vital importance of global trade union solidarity in an increasingly globalised world economy. This year, the World Day for Decent Work will concentrate on precarious work. Typically, precarious employment refers to non-permanent, temporary, casual, insecure and contingent forms of work.
