Read reports of activities for the Action Week:

On 6-12 October 2010, unions and their members will come together to organise a variety of activities to highlight issues linked to the slogan, "Respect & Safety Now!"

Fatigue and road safety are two important themes that unions can highlight during this Action Week.

Fatigue Kills!

"Fatigue Kills!" was the original slogan for the ITF Road Transport Action Week and it remains a serious problem.

The principal objective of the Campaign is to put in place and enforce acceptable limits on drivers’ working hours and rest period.  The purpose is to achieve limits on drivers’ hours which respond to the safety, health and social demands of drivers and which promote the general public interest by contributing towards improved road safety.

Road transport workers’ demands include:

There have been some concrete achievements with unions in some countries having won new legislation and improvements in working conditions for their members.

Can your union use the Action Week in 2010 to raise awareness on fatigue and lobby for acceptable limits on drivers’ working hours and rest periods to be put in place and enforced?

Road Transport Safety

In 2011, the United Nations (UN) will launch a ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’ with the aim of stabilising and then reducing global road deaths by 2020.  The ITF is a member of the UN Road Safety Collaboration, which has taken the lead to prepare and implement an action plan for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.  The Action Week is therefore a good opportunity for unions to highlight the need for long-term and coordinated activities in support of national and local road safety as well as to emphasize the importance of unions being included in this process.

HIV/AIDS, violence and sexual harassment at work, and container cargo safety are also key health & safety issues that the ITF has been working on.  Can your union use the Action Week to promote awareness and to take action on these issues?
