Let’s close the prevention gap

  • Sobre a campanha

According to UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, an estimated 1.9 million adults have become infected with HIV every year for the past five years, with the decline in new infections having stalled. That’s why the ITF and its affiliates are backing the UNAIDS Hands up for HIV prevention campaign in the run-up to World AIDS Day 2016.

The UNAIDS’s Prevention gap report highlights how in some regions the number of new infections is rising and that efforts to ensure there are fewer than 500,000 by 2020 are off track. Data from 146 countries show that although some have reduced the number of new HIV infections among adults by 50 percent or more over the last 10 years, others have either made no measurable progress or experienced worrying increases. The world needs to take action urgently to close the prevention gap to stave off a resurgence of the epidemic.

Jebsen Gamido, president of Global Pinoy Seafarers Plus in the Philippines, reinforces the HIV prevention message, particularly among young seafarers:

Transport unions can help us stay on the fast track to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 by being part of this year’s World AIDS Day campaign.
