Nordic week of action day four update
24/09/09
A further 60 ship visits took place yesterday as part of the ongoing 2009 Nordic week of action. The inspection teams continue to work on resolving issues raised by crew during the most recent visits and also those arising from inspections earlier in the week.
Latest reports indicate another ship owner has applied for ITF-approved agreements on two vessels in Germany, while the action team are assisting crew on four other vessels in Norway, Denmark, Estonia and Finland to recover outstanding wages not paid by their owners.
In one or two cases inspection teams have been denied access by the ship’s master but in every other instance the crews are reported to have responded positively to the ship visits, taking the opportunity to ask questions and exchange opinions on a variety of subjects related to life at sea and conditions of employment.
Media coverage of the Nordic week of action continues to be strong with union officials and ITF inspectors interviewed by newspapers and local and national TV. The action teams together with representatives of dockers’ unions have also attended two half-day seminars with workers in various ports to promote awareness of the Flags of Convenience campaign in the Nordic Region.
