ITF calls on affiliates to back Georgia/South Ossetia humanitarian effort
14/08/08
The ITF today called on its member unions to join it in backing a fund for relief and reconstruction in Georgia/South Ossetia.
The Federation is joining a relief fund being organised by the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation) and ETUC (European Trade Union Confederation), both of which, like the ITF, have member unions in both Russia and Georgia.
ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: “It’s vital that there is an immediate cessation of all hostilities in the area, coupled with urgent and meaningful negotiations. The third immediate need is for humanitarian assistance, which, thanks to the ITUC, we and other trade unions can now more easily give.”
The following is the ITUC/ETUC appeal which the ITF is joining.
Appeal for Solidarity Support to Victims of Military Conflict in Georgia/ South Ossetia
The ITUC and ETUC have been monitoring with deep concern the military conflict of recent days in Georgia/South Ossetia.
In a statement today, www.etuc.org/a/5270 we welcomed the moves towards the ending of violence and stressed the need to begin a peaceful process of dialogue.
The ITUC and ETUC have also expressed their solidarity with the many civilian victims of the fighting and called for them to be provided with the humanitarian assistance that they urgently need. Information now available indicates that there has been widespread damage to homes and infrastructure and that tens of thousands of people have been displaced.
After consultation with the ITUC affiliates in Georgia and in Russia, the ITUC and the ETUC are calling on their members across the world to provide financial contributions for the relief of the victims of the violence.
Please send your contribution to the ITUC-CSI account n° 375-1008200-61 with the Bank ING, Business Branch Institutionals, Rue du Trône 14-16, B-1000 Brussels (IBAN code: BE62375100820061 - BIC/Swift Code: BBRUBEBB).
