Week of action reaches midpoint with continued gains

The ITF maritime week of action today reached its midway point, with participants reporting scores of ship visits across northern Europe.
ITF inspectors, dockers and union volunteers are checking ships in Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the UK (see www.itfglobal.org/press-area/index.cfm/pressdetail/1328 or the action week’s web page at www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/newa.cfm for more details).
Steve Cotton, ITF Maritime Coordinator, commented: “This has been another first class day, with vessels checked and given a clean bill of health - or targeted for further action if things onboard are going wrong. Across Europe we’ve got inspections and rallies taking place at an increasing pace.
Initial reports of developments for the third day include (as of 17:00 BST):
Poland: Six ships visited so far today in Gdynia, Gdansk and Szczecin, including the Panamanian flagged, Greek owned M/v Eleni. Boarded by a team of 15 volunteers from NMS NSZZ ‘Solidarnosc’, Dockers Section NSZZ ‘Solidarnosc’ and Polish Seafarers’ Union. Port State Control contacted, expanded inspection ongoing. Negotiations with Greek company, with the Master and Greek superintendent.
The Netherlands: Continuing actions on board vessels calling Rotterdam without an agreement. M/v CMA CGM Maya was not operated by the dockers. Company agreed to sign up the ship with German union Verdi, Similar situation on the M/v EWL Central America. Negotiations with shipowner ongoing. Dockers’ representatives boarded the M/v Bruarfoss because of suspicion of cargo handling by seafarers. The company was warned about the possibility of repercussions if the situation is not rectified. A press release follows (below) in Dutch.
UK and Ireland: Rally held outside the Celtic Terminal in Dublin port. RMT welcomed the 'massive step forward' gained through recognition of the union by Maersk subsidiary Norfolkline. A press release on this follows (below).
Estonia: Two ships visited so far today
Belgium: 10 vessels visited so far today in Antwerp and Ghent
Russia: Six vessels visited so far today
France: Rally and stoppage of M/v Normandie. Meeting with Celtic Line ongoing.
Lithuania: Four ships visited so far today, one agreement to be signed.

RMT hails 'massive step forward' of Norfolkline recognition in Dover
MARITIME UNION RMT today welcomed the 'masssive step forward' gained through recognition of the union by Norfolkline, the Maersk Marine subsidiary that operates three ferries between Dover and Dunquerque.
As RMT and sister maritime unions intensified a week of action against rogue shipping employers, Norfolkline conceded recognition to RMT to represent deck, engine-room and catering ratings on the Maersk Delft, Maersk Dover and Maersk Dunquerque.
"Maersk itself has generally good relations with RMT and our sister unions, and it makes sense for its Norfolkline subsidiary to come into line and recognise that RMT represents ratings on these vessels," general secretary Bob Crow said today.
"We demonstrated conclusively to Norfolkline through Acas that RMT already had substantial membership on the three vessels operating out of Dover, and I hope that we can now look to a future of sensible negotiation on pay and conditions.
"The company has also agreed in principle to extend recognition to UK catering ratings on the Liverpool-Belfast route, and we will conclude an agreement shortly.
"However, there are still serious problems with other vessels owned or operated by Norfolkline in the Irish Sea, and we will continue to work alongside our Irish colleagues to win decent employment standards on all vessels in these waters," Bob Crow said.
"We have travelled a long hard road to win recognition by Norfolkline at Dover, and a lot of people have put a lot of hard organising work into ensuring that this happened," said national secretary Steve Todd.
"We now have solid organisation aboard all three vessels and have taken another step towards our goal of ensuring that the ferry industry is fully organised," Steve Todd said.

EWL CENTRAL AMERICA ligt werkeloos in Waalhaven door acties
Op dit moment vinden er acties plaats aan boord van de EWL CENTRAL AMERICA geregistreerd onder de Antigua & Barbuda vlag en wederom in eigendom van een in Duitsland gevestigd bedrijf en gemanaged door Marlow Navigation uit Cyprus, die ook voor de Geestdijk verantwoordelijk is. Het schip ligt afgemeerd bij Uniport Multipurpose Terminals in de Waalhaven. Om 12.15 uur zijn de werkzaamheden stopgezet, omdat de eigenaren taal noch teken lieten horen. Thans zijn vertegenwoordigers van Marlow, de charteraar en ITF en FNV Bondgenoten aan boord naarstig aan het zoeken naar oplossingen om de werkonderbreking een halt toe te roepen.
Het bezoek van de vakbondsdelegatie gisteren aan boord van de bij MOT liggende tanker "Seabravery" van Thenamaris uit Griekenland heeft er toe bijgedragen dat morgen, 7 juni in Piraeus, 23 schepen van deze rederij onder contract worden gebracht bij de ITF.
De werkzaamheden op CMA CGM MAYA, varende onder de vlag van Anigua & Barbuda, waren gisteren voor 2 uur stilgelegd om een goedgekeurd ITF agreement voor de bemanning af te dwingen. In dit agreement wordt tevens overeengekomen dat havenwerkzaamheden., zoals het sjorren van de lading, door havenwerkers verricht moet worden. In het verleden hebben zich nl. ernstige ongevallen voorgedaan in o.a. de Rotterdamse havens, waarbij zeelieden het leven hebben verloren.
Innavolging op de Geestdijk was dit het tweede schip dat in de Rotterdamse haven problemen heeft ondervinden van de gezamenlijke actie van FNV Bondgenoten en Nautilus NL, aangevoerd door de ITF.
Dagelijks gaat een delegatie van ITF, FNV Bondgenoten en Nautilus NL iedere ochtend - aangestuurd door de ITF - op bezoek bij een aantal kapiteins en bemanningsleden en controleren op deze wijze de naleving van de contracten die zijn overeengekomen.
De acties aan boord van de "Geestdijk" hebben maandag tot ver na 22.00 uur voortgeduurd, waarna is besloten om de werkzaamheden weer te hervatten. In de loop van de avond hebben vele onderhandelingen plaatsgevonden, die echter nog niet tot het gewenste resultaat hebben geleid, maar de rederij heeft de boodschap duidelijk meegekregen en zal zich gaan beraden. Wel heeft de charteraar Samskip van zich laten horen, door aan te geven dat zij niet "amused" waren van deze acties.(RT)
