Murder of trade union leader ‘a cowardly outrage’ (También en version española)

The ITF has expressed outrage over the execution-style murder of Pedro Zamora, General Secretary of the Guatemalan STEPQ dockers’ union. He was shot 20 times by multiple assailants who ambushed him as he collected his sons from a hospital appointment at 19:00 on Monday (January 15). After firing 100 shots one walked up to the wounded Zamora and shot him at point blank range in the face – in front of his children, one of whom, three year old Angel, was wounded in the attack. Zamora’s last act had been to push the children to the floor to try and protect them.
David Cockroft, ITF General Secretary said: “This is an outrage, pure and simple. It could not have been a more dirty and cowardly attack. It’s a filthy little act that makes the blood of any decent person boil. The Guatemalan government will never be forgiven if it doesn’t investigate and then bring the murderers to justice.”
“The government and police are under the spotlight on this one. We and the international community will not allow them to let this case slip conveniently away the way they have too many times in the past. The people who carried out this brutal attack must be found, along with the people who ordered it – no matter who they are and how high up they work. The paramilitary style of this murder, including the use of the ‘tiro de gracia’, the shot in the face long favoured by right wing death squads and their for-hire thugs, should give the authorities a few pointers to where to begin looking.”
“Pedro was one of our own, a valued member of the ITF as well as a family man and leader of his trade union. We will grieve for him alongside his family, friends and colleagues, but we will not forget that it does not end here.”
Pedro Zamora had known he was being followed for several months, in response to his role in defending workers’ jobs at Quetzal, while police were also sent to intimidate him, reportedly at the orders of the port company. The ITF protested to the government about this in October last year, and notified the ILO (International Labour Organization), which has remonstrated with Guatemala before over the number of killings of trade unionists – see ITF Press Release: Police invasion of Guatemalan port ‘risks crisis’: ITF for details.
At the time of his murder Pedro Zamora was continuing to negotiate on behalf of his members over the future of the port (more details at URL above). Just a week ago the Minister of Communications, Transport and Public Works had committed parliament to reinstate nine unfairly sacked workers, as requested by STEPQ and the ITF – reportedly to the anger of the port’s general manager, who was implicated as the man who ordered police to go into the port and arrest union leaders last year.
Zamora had taken his children to the hospital located within the port. The attackers were waiting for him as he left the port.

Asesinato de un dirigente sindical “un cobarde ultraje”
La ITF ha expresado su indignación por el asesinato, perpetrado como si fuera una ejecución, de Pedro Zamora, Secretario General del Sindicato de Trabajadores Portuarios STEPQ de Guatemala, al recibir 20 disparos de varios asesinos quienes lo emboscaron después de que él recogía a sus hijos, que salían de una cita del hospital a las 19:00 el día lunes (15 de Enero). Tras efectuar unos cien disparos, uno de los sicarios se aproximó al ya malherido Zamora, y le disparó en la cara a quemarropa – en frente de sus hijos, uno de los cuales, Ángel, de tres años de edad, también resultó herido durante el ataque. El último acto de Zamora fue empujar a sus hijos hacia el suelo del vehículo para tratar de protegerlos.
David Cockroft, Secretario General de la ITF comentó: “Esto es definitivamente un cobarde ultraje. No se podría haber pensado en un ataque más sucio y más cobarde. Actos sucios como éste hacen que la sangre de cualquier persona decente hierva en la venas. El Gobierno de Guatemala jamás será perdonado si no efectúa una investigación que resulte en la detención y enjuiciamiento de los asesinos”.
“El Gobierno y la policía están bajo la mira por causa de esto. Ni nosotros, ni la comunidad internacional permitiremos que éste crimen sea simplemente olvidado de la misma forma en que ha acontecido en el pasado con otros casos. Los asesinos materiales que efectuaron este brutal ataque deben ser detenidos junto con los asesinos intelectuales – no importa quienes sean, o que tan alto rango tengan. El estilo paramilitar de éste asesinato, incluyendo el uso del “tiro de gracia”, el disparo en la cara, fue el sistema preferido de los escuadrones de la muerte de la ultraderecha y de sus mercenarios, lo cual debe de dar a las autoridades algunas pistas que indiquen donde comenzar la investigación”.
“Pedro era uno de los nuestros, un apreciado miembro de la ITF así como un padre de familia y un dirigente sindical de su organización. Compartimos el pésame con su familia, amigos y colegas y no permitiremos que este acto termine aquí.”
Pedro Zamora sabía que, durante varios meses, estaba siendo seguido, como resultado de haber luchado por la defensa de los puestos de trabajo en Quetzal, simultáneamente, la empresa portuaria habría enviado repetidamente policías para intimidarlo. La ITF protestó contra el Gobierno sobre esta situación el pasado mes de octubre y notificó a la OIT (Organización Internacional del Trabajo) quien anteriormente se ha manifestado contra Guatemala por los asesinatos de varios sindicalistas – para más detalles consultar ITF Press Release: Police invasion of Guatemalan port ‘risks crisis’: ITF
El asesinato ocurre justo cuando Pedro Zamora mantenía una negociación, en representación de sus afiliados, sobre el futuro del Puerto (mas información en la página de Internet arriba indicada). Tan sólo la semana anterior, y gracias a las gestiones del STEPQ y de la ITF, el Ministro de Comunicaciones, Transporte y Obras Públicas se había comprometido ante el Congreso a reinstalar a nueve trabajadores quienes habían sido despedidos injustificadamente, ante la furia del Gerente General, quien ha sido identificado como la persona que ordenó que la policía ingresara al Puerto para arrestar a los dirigentes sindicales el año pasado.
Zamora había llevado a sus hijos al hospital que se encuentra localizado dentro del Puerto. Los Asesinos estaban esperando hasta que saliera de las instalaciones portuarias.
